Wire  Masks

Twisted Faces formed in Wire
Picture
Me and My Imaginary Friend, Shadow.
Bending wire to create these line 'drawings' of people is cartoon art for me! Instead of spending more than 40 hours on a painting or spirit vessel, I can make a face in 4 or 5 hours.  I have found a whole new application for the contour drawing classes I took years ago at UC Santa Barbara,  in bending the line to create volume and expression out of copper or steel wire. They are 'naked masks' revealing the essence of character, sometimes clowning, sometimes a feeling that's on their mind.

About 9 x 12 inches, these Twisted Characters look great hanging in small contemplative spaces. I notice myself putting all sorts of ideas into their empty, twisted heads...or just letting them talk themselves silly with their imaginary friend, their Shadow.  Who said I was crazy?
